Sky/Trees/Fence/Meadow/Grass/Flowering bush/Rocks by Kimbo Franke
19.5” x 19.5” oil on stretched canvas, Framed in maple Euro-ply floating frame
I painted this piece of a beloved spot near my home in Tahoe shortly before moving permanently to Reno. This wetland gave me (and my dog Parker Peach) a lot joy, but the actual painting is bittersweet in nature as it was hard to say goodbye to it. I treated the painting in a somewhat irreverent manner labeling each element of the painting and changing the colors scheme of the meadow and foliage. Perhaps this was an effort to gloss over my true feelings. Wow, this all sounds so sad and opposite of the theme presented but, it was in fact, a very joyful place…so velvety and colorful and guaranteeing time lost in wandering and exploring.

What makes you truly happy?
The senses cause me happiness…all five, of course. For me, most easily indulged outside. The way the sunlight trims a cloud, casts a deep shadow of a tree, warms the forest floor until it yields a sharp scent, feeds the velvety soft petals of a wildflower, makes a foraged pine nut tingle on the tongue. The thin air carrying the sounds of birdsong and tinkling leaves. These things make me happy.
