Mothership:Earth is an active space containing three specific working methods which relate to and enable a deep connection with the Earth as a living sentient entity.

Through the working methods involved in the creation of the works which make up Mothership:Earth, a shift in awareness developed through the repetition of movement, and the visual solitude of the creative activity. This enabled a reawakening of the phenomena of time. More specifically the slowing down of time which is a byproduct of hand sewing and the repetitious mantra-like movement.

The exhibition is divided into three spaces :

Focused Awareness

Earth Music

Deep Listening

All three spaces relate to an activity which can create; and effect a slowing down and appreciation of the Earth and its diverse environments.

Focused awareness is an activity which is actioned within the realm of hand embroidery. Through this act of focused awareness the consciousness of the stitcher is expanded which enables an appreciation of the connectedness of life.

Earth Music relates to the unsound music and quietness of nature. The loudness of a mountain, or a vast open meadow contains the notes between the notes : the colours.

Deep Listening is an immersion in the whole - visuals and aural. The comfort to the physical/ emotional and spiritual is cloaked within the three layers of fabric which make up a quilt.

JEAN BRENNAN

Amongst the many projects Jean is working on simultaneously, is the OUT OF THIN AIR series. She explains: Our olfactory sense triggers memories—and by association, one might say that smell is linked to time in human perception. Forests pre-logging smelled different from today's forests, and that smell is ever-changing as forest succession and climate change march on.

This experimental research is a sensory teaching tool to talk about the delicate complexity of our forests in a warming climate. It employs ethnobotanical processes, such as distillation, tinctures, and smoke, to create scent combinations that map forest succession in Prospect Park, Brooklyn—from pre-European settlement to future scenarios.

Outcomes also include a video essay, botanical drawings, microscopic footage, process documentation, and blotters.

A second and ongoing project COLOR STUDIES is a series that uses extractive methods to produce natural dyes, inks, and essences as an ethnobotanical study of plants and place.
