“American Snapshot” and “no-such-place…”

We are very excited to invite you to the opening reception of 2 new shows!

Painter Kelly Popoff, and her magical, intensely autobiographical solo exhibition American Snapshot
and, no-such-place… a group show of invited artists who are playfully exploring the landscape genre in non-traditional ways.

Reception 4 June 4-7pm

Artist and educator, Kelly Popoff, was born in Akron, Ohio and lives and works in Greenfield, MA.

The work in this exhibit includes work from the last three years. During this time Kelly Popoff has been looking at images of Americana: doll collections, gun collections, antique furniture, clothing patterns, model home kits, yearbooks, toys, etc.. Perhaps as an instinctive response to try to make sense of our current culture by looking back. Or maybe, to find connections that may explain why our history seems so present and unresolved. More recently, she has been gifted a large collection of vintage snapshots that allowed her a more intimate look into America’s past. Popoff's current paintings and drawings use these photos as a reference to try to capture the essence of American life – with emphasis on family, memory and socio-psychological dynamics.

no-such-place...

An exhibition of invited artists playfully exploring non-traditional approaches to the landscape genre.
In Nevada, we exist between many extremes; from blue skies every day, to freezing snow blizzards, scorching desert heat, earthquakes as tectonic plates collide, dust devils across playa, hailstorms in summer, to uncontrollable wildfires ravaging the landscape.
After these last strange years of internalization, absence from friends and excursions, living more and more through the screen, these are contemporary artists thinking about our surroundings, exploring landscapes of the imagination or no-such-places, where the mind, heart and eye can rest or dream…

We are hosting an EKPHRASTIC WRITING WORKSHOP with Karen Terrey of Tangled Roots writing, in conjunction with the solo exhibition "American Snapshot" by Kelly Popoff

Join us for an evening of deeper reflection on the current show in a playful and generative creative writing workshop “From the wall to the page: making story and poetry from art” June 22nd at 6 – 7:30 pm. In this creative writing workshop, we will talk about how writers can respond to visual art as inspiration for new writing in poetry and prose. What is happening in this artwork? What story is being told? How does this artwork connect with you personally? As a storyteller or a poet, you’ll discover new methods to understanding art as well as new jumpstarts for art-inspired (ekphrastic) writing. Arrive early if you’d like to view the show with snacks and beverages. We will begin at 6 pm with a short discussion with insights into the art of …, , and then sit down to write from a fun series of writing prompts. This is a supportive, playful, and generative workshop for creatives of all art mediums and all levels of experience.

Gallery Hours: Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Noon to 6pm
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 7, 3–5pm
Closing Reception: Saturday, June 4, 4–6pm
Organized and Produced by ecoartspace

Including more than fifty artists from the New York City region working in painting, sculpture, video and installation, members of ecoartspace, an international platform for artists addressing environmental issues.

The exhibition’s title, “Fragile Rainbow: Traversing Habitats,” found inspiration in the show’s largest artwork, Claire McConaughy’s painting Fragile Rainbow (2021). In her words, McConaughy’s sanguine waterscape addresses “interconnection, loss, transformation, and hope.” Her title is especially relevant for this heterogeneous exhibition of artworks by ecoartspace members based in the New York City region whose paintings, sculptures, photographs, and installations evoke “connection, loss, transformation, and hope.” These artists are especially conscious of our indebtedness to living beings in our midst and human beings’ obligation to appreciate and protect organic and inorganic matter alike.
